The U.S. Small Business Administration’s Office of Women’s Business Ownership recently announced that they have awarded contracts to nineteen new women’s business centers around the country for the 2006-2007 fiscal year. The Women’s Business Center, Inc. located in Mobile was awarded one of these contracts valued at $195,000 for the first year and $150,000 a year for the following four years.

Under this new contract, the Women’s Business Center which has been serving women in Mobile and Baldwin Counties since 1993, will expand its services to five rural counties to the north. These counties are: Washington, Clarke, Monroe, Conecuh and Escambia. The unique feature of this new project is the use of a “Bizmobile” vehicle specifically designed to take small business services on the road and out into the community. Community partnerships will be established in each county. A business counselor will drive the Bizmobile out on a regular schedule to conduct training and business counseling at these partner locations. Follow up and project management will take place at the corporate office located in Mobile.

Sylvia Browder, a former business owner and experienced counselor with the local Chapter of SCORE (Service Corp of Retired Executives), has been chosen to be the project director. She will work under the direction of Kathryn Cariglino, founder and executive director of the Women’s Business Center, Inc.

Besides the Mobile center, which holds the distinction of being the first and the oldest women’s business center in the state of Alabama, this year the SBA has also funded the Central Alabama Women’s Business Center in Birmingham and the North Alabama Women’s Business Center in Huntsville.

The Women’s Business Center is funded in part through a Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration. Reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities will be made if requested at least two weeks in advance.
